At Nicholas Ashton Education’s Debating Club, students engage in lively discussions, challenge perspectives, and learn to articulate their ideas with clarity and confidence. Unlike Drama Club, which is 90% practical, Debating Club is ideas-based, focusing on cerebral learning, critical thinking, and persuasive communication.

Why Debate?

In today’s world, the ability to think critically, consider new perspectives, and express thoughts persuasively is more valuable than ever. Our sessions equip students with the tools to:

1. Develop and articulate ideas with precision and confidence

2. Cultivate flexible thinking, considering multiple perspectives before forming an opinion

3. Stay open-minded, learning to engage with differing viewpoints respectfully

4. Explore values, morals, and beliefs, refining their own while understanding others

5. Build structured arguments, using logic, evidence, and persuasive techniques

We recognise that students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, each with their own viewpoints and beliefs. Our goal is not to challenge or change these, but to provide a respectful space where they can explore ideas, think critically, and articulate their perspectives with confidence. Every discussion is handled with care, sensitivity, and an emphasis on open-minded, respectful dialogue

Mastering the Language of Debate

Effective debating isn’t just about what you say—it’s about how you say it. Students will learn to structure their arguments with clarity using key debating techniques, including:

1. Opening statements: "Firstly, let me outline my argument..."

2. Developing points: "Furthermore, this leads us to consider..."

3. Addressing opposing views: "Whilst I see your point, I would argue that..."

4. Making comparisons: "On the one hand… on the other hand..."

5. Challenging respectfully: "That’s an interesting perspective, however..."

6. Concluding with impact: "To summarise, the evidence clearly shows that..."
